Responding to the ‘God the Mother’ Heresy”
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…” — 1 John 4:1
Introduction
In recent years, many Christians and families have encountered religious groups that appear sincere, friendly, and Bible-centered, yet teach doctrines completely contrary to Scripture. One increasingly active movement promotes the idea of “God the Mother,” claiming that salvation requires belief in a female deity alongside God the Father. Often these encounters happen unexpectedly — in neighborhoods, parking lots, at front doors, or through casual conversations.
Many believers are caught off guard because these individuals frequently quote Scripture rapidly, appear passionate, and speak with confidence. Yet passion alone does not equal truth. Satan has always worked through distortion, confusion, and counterfeit spirituality. The enemy’s strategy is not usually to remove religion altogether, but to subtly corrupt the gospel.
This study is designed to help men stand firm spiritually, protect their families, and respond biblically when confronted with deceptive teaching.
Study Purpose
This study equips men to:
- Recognize deceptive religious teachings
- Protect their wives and children from spiritual confusion
- Respond with truth, calmness, and love
- Grow in confidence handling Scripture correctly
- Understand why “God the Mother” teachings are unbiblical
Opening Discussion
Discussion Questions
- Have you or your family ever been approached by a group using Scripture in a confusing way?
- Why can false teaching sound convincing at first?
- What makes people spiritually vulnerable to deception?
- Why is biblical discernment especially important for men leading families?
Part 1 — Jesus Warned Us That False Teachers Would Come
Read Together
- Matthew 7:15–16
- Matthew 24:24
- Acts 20:28–30
Jesus never suggested deception might come into the church. He warned repeatedly that false teachers would arise and that many people would be led astray. In Matthew 7, Jesus described false teachers as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.” Wolves do not announce themselves openly. They disguise themselves. Likewise, false teachers often appear kind, compassionate, sincere, and knowledgeable.
Paul later warned the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 that “fierce wolves” would arise even from among professing believers. This reminds us that spiritual deception is not always obvious. Some of the most dangerous false teaching uses biblical language while subtly twisting biblical meaning.
This is why men must become spiritually grounded leaders in their homes. A husband and father cannot protect his family spiritually if he does not know God’s Word for himself. Discernment is not paranoia or fearfulness; it is spiritual maturity.

- Jude 3–4
- 1 Timothy 4:1
Discussion Questions
- Why do false teachers often appear sincere?
- Why is kindness alone not enough to determine truth?
- How can men better guard their homes spiritually?
Part 2 — Understanding the “God the Mother” Teaching
Certain groups, including the World Mission Society Church of God, teach that God has a literal female counterpart referred to as “God the Mother.” They claim this female deity is necessary for salvation and that traditional Christianity has hidden this truth for centuries.
These groups often teach:
- Their church alone possesses truth
- Jesus already returned secretly
- Christians outside their organization are spiritually blind
- Salvation requires acceptance of their teachings and leadership
A common tactic is overwhelming people with rapid-fire Scripture references. Instead of carefully studying passages in context, they jump quickly between verses to create confusion. This technique often pressures people emotionally before they have time to examine Scripture carefully.
The Bible repeatedly warns believers against accepting “new revelations” that contradict the gospel already delivered through Christ and His apostles.
Paul wrote in Galatians:
“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” — Galatians 1:8
Truth does not change because someone sounds passionate or confident.
Cross References:
- Colossians 2:8
- 2 Corinthians 11:3–4
- Titus 1:10–11
Discussion Questions
- Why are people often impressed by confidence and passion?
- Why is context essential when someone quotes Scripture?
- What dangers exist when a group claims exclusive truth?
Part 3 — The Scripture They Commonly Misuse
Read Together
- Galatians 4:21–31
One of the primary passages used by “God the Mother” groups is Galatians 4:26:
“But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.”
They claim this verse proves the existence of a literal female deity. However, this interpretation completely ignores the context of Paul’s argument.
Paul clearly explains that he is using an allegory involving Hagar and Sarah. Hagar represents slavery under the law, while Sarah represents freedom through God’s promise. The “Jerusalem above” symbolizes the heavenly covenant of grace, not a literal goddess or divine mother figure.
The entire chapter is about salvation through faith versus bondage under legalism. Paul is not introducing a new doctrine about a female deity. Instead, he is illustrating spiritual freedom in Christ.
This reminds us of a critical principle of Bible interpretation:
A verse must never be separated from its context.
False teachers often isolate one phrase while ignoring the surrounding passage and the teaching of the rest of Scripture.
Cross References:
- 2 Timothy 2:15
- Nehemiah 8:8
- Luke 24:27
Discussion Questions
- Why is reading the entire chapter important?
- How does context expose false teaching?
- Have you ever heard verses used incorrectly before?
Part 4 — What the Bible Actually Teaches About God
Read Together
- Deuteronomy 6:4
- Isaiah 44:6
- John 4:24
- Genesis 1:27
The Bible consistently teaches that there is one true God. God is Spirit and transcends human biology. Although Scripture uses fatherly language to reveal God relationally, nowhere does the Bible command worship of a divine mother.
Jesus consistently referred to God as Father and taught His disciples to pray:
“Our Father in heaven…”
Never once did Jesus or the apostles teach worship of “God the Mother.” If such a doctrine were essential for salvation, it would have been plainly taught throughout the New Testament.
Instead, Scripture repeatedly points believers to Christ alone.
Cross References:
- John 14:6
- Acts 4:12
- 1 Corinthians 8:6
Discussion Questions
- Why is it dangerous to build doctrine from symbolism alone?
- Why is Jesus’ teaching our ultimate authority?
- How does Scripture consistently reveal God?
Part 5 — Common Tactics of False Teachers
False teachers often rely on confusion rather than clarity. Their methods are usually strategic and emotionally persuasive.
Verse Jumping
They rapidly move between unrelated passages before a person can examine context carefully.
Secret Knowledge
They claim:
- “Only we understand the Bible.”
- “The church has hidden the truth.”
- “Pastors are deceived.”
This tactic appeals to pride and curiosity.
Emotional Pressure
False groups often create urgency:
- “You must understand this now.”
- “Your salvation depends on this.”
- “Time is running out.”
Isolation
Many cult-like groups slowly isolate people from trusted pastors, churches, and Christian family members.
But biblical truth welcomes examination.
The Bereans were praised because they searched the Scriptures daily to verify what Paul taught.
Read Together
- Acts 17:11
Cross References:
- 1 John 4:1
- Proverbs 14:15
Discussion Questions
- Why do deceptive groups discourage outside counsel?
- What does the Berean example teach us?
- How can men cultivate discernment in daily life?
Part 6 — How Men Should Respond Biblically
Read Together
- 2 Timothy 2:24–26
- 1 Peter 3:15
- Titus 1:9
Christians are not called to respond with arrogance or hostility. We are called to respond with gentleness, patience, and truth. Many people trapped in false systems are sincere and spiritually deceived.
When approached by false teachers:
- Stay calm
- Ask thoughtful questions
- Keep conversations focused on Christ
- Return repeatedly to the gospel
Helpful questions include:
- “Can we read the whole chapter together?”
- “Where did Jesus teach this doctrine?”
- “Why is this absent from the preaching in Acts?”
- “How does this align with the full counsel of Scripture?”
Men especially must lead their families in biblical discernment. Wives and children should know:
- Not every religious person teaches truth
- Scripture must be read in context
- Sincerity does not equal accuracy
Discussion Questions
- Why is gentleness important when defending truth?
- How can men prepare their families without creating fear?
- Why should the gospel remain central in these conversations?
Part 7 — The True Gospel
Read Together
- Ephesians 2:8–9
- John 14:6
- Acts 4:12
- Galatians 1:6–9
The true gospel is beautifully simple:
We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Any teaching that adds:
- secret revelations,
- additional mediators,
- exclusive organizations,
- new doctrines about God,
- or altered paths to salvation
is preaching another gospel.
The gospel does not need additions because Christ’s work on the cross is fully sufficient.
False religion places people into fear and dependence upon organizations. The true gospel points people to freedom and assurance in Jesus Christ.
Life Application
Men today are called to be spiritual watchmen for their homes. In a world filled with confusion, biblical ignorance, and deceptive teaching, families desperately need men who know Scripture and lead with wisdom.
This study is not merely about identifying one false doctrine. It is about developing lifelong discernment rooted in God’s Word.
This week:
- Spend time reading Scripture in full context
- Begin or strengthen family devotions
- Teach your children how to examine Scripture carefully
- Pray regularly for discernment
- Stay grounded in a healthy, Bible-believing church
Remember:
The answer to deception is not fear.
The answer is truth.
“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as truth. Help us to become men who rightly handle Scripture and lead our families with wisdom and courage. Guard our hearts and minds from deception. Give us compassion toward those who are misled, while helping us stand firmly upon the gospel of Jesus Christ. Strengthen us to remain faithful, discerning, humble, and bold for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
