If we have read much of the old testament in the bible, it is inevitable that we have come across the description and event of a sacrificial offering. The slaughter of animals, the smearing of blood. To me, many times the visual thoughts I actually get of the holy of holies is that of a slaughter house. The smell of blood, splattered blood all over the mercy seat, splatter blood on the walls. It is very graphic if we read through some of the sacrifices.
This week in our study we have the opportunity to learn in detail about the sacrifices. Why they were done a certain way, what was the intention, and how does it effect us today. Or does it?
The Agnus Dei painting above has many symbolic meanings that can be acknowledged. The bound feet depicts “the punishment, that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. The lamb’s facial expression of affliction and oppression. Then the animal itself is used through out the bible to illustrate “we all, like sheep, have gone astray”.
Most of us have grasped the concept of a sacrifice and even have come to believe that Jesus was the sacrifice for our sins. But what about this thing called atonement? Do we grasp what atonement is? We may have even heard of Yon Kippur, but we don’t connect with it. We think it is some strange holiday for someone else. Let us take the time to pause and understand what it represents and then we can fully relate to such a holiday. Yes, it is the holiest day of the year for Jewish people, but what about for us?
