True Sons – True Father
This last weeks reading (Chapter 2) has been a foundational lesson on who we are, where we are and who we are going home to. Through the book and the study guide there were many references to the brokenness of families.
A few sections of scripture that can challenge many of us:
9“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! – Matthew 7:9-10 NLT
Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? – Matthew 6:26 NLT
“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? – Matthew 18:12 NLT
Not just reading the scripture with knowledge of Jesus, but associated with your life. Our approach to these scriptures will be defined by our families and parents. Where are you in each of the stories?
As the child asking, what is it like in your world? What would your attitude and feelings be to even approach your father and ask? Did you feel valuable? What would it feel like to have your father come and find you?
Then, there is the prodigal. The one that went off and pissed away all he had. He thought he had all the answers and the world by the tail. Then he had to come home. Many of us have our own version, probably more than one. And yet, most likely no two are alike.
How do you personally relate to the story?
Let us rejoice that things of this world are different with God as our father. Let us move into reading this next week about the Boyhood stage. The video for the week is below and we get a couple of assignments at the bottom to walk through this week.
